Mahasen Abu-Mansour appointed by King Abdullah

John McCarthy reports:

Mahasen Abu-Mansour, a former visiting scholar at UMass in the 1990s that teaches linguistics at Umm Al-Qura University, has been appointed by King Abdullah to the Majlis Al-Shura, which is the legislature of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She is one of 12 women in this 200-seat consultative body.

Anna Verbuk to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Anna Verbuk (2007 UMass Amherst PhD) has accepted a position as Research Specialist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It's a one-year postdoc in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science. Anna will, among other things, teach an introductory undergraduate class Children, Communication and Language Ability.

Kyle Rawlins to Johns Hopkins

UMass Amherst Linguistics BA Kyle Rawlins has accepted a tenure-track job in the Cognitive Science Department at Johns Hopkins, where he is currently a visiting professor. Kyle earned his BA from UMass Amherst in 2003 (along with an BS in computer science), then headed to UC Santa Cruz for his doctoral work, graduating in 2008. Congratulations, Kyle!

Amalia Gnanadesikan to Holy Family University

Amalia Gnanadesikan (1997 UMass Amherst Linguistics PhD) has accepted a permanent faculty position at Holy Family University in northeast Philadelphia. She'll be teaching writing. Amalia has been a regular contributor to The Vocabula Review. Her popular book The Writing Revolution: Cuneiform to the Internet is in press at Blackwell.

Syntax Position at University of Georgia

The Linguistics Program at the University of Georgia now invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in syntax. Due to the nature of late call, we accept electrical submission. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Shigeto Kawahara.

Assistant Professor of Linguistics (Syntax)
The Linguistics Program at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level, to begin August 18, 2008. Applicants should have a primary research and teaching interest in syntax. A secondary area of specialization that complements the existing areas of the program is desirable. The ideal candidate will be someone with documented evidence of excellence in research and teaching who is eager to engage with students and faculty in our interdisciplinary program. Responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester at either the undergraduate or the graduate level, maintaining an active research program, and mentoring graduate student research. Ph.D. in Linguistics required at the time of appointment.

Send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, writing sample, three current letters of recommendation, and graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) to:

Anna Verbuk has filed her dissertation, Acquisition of Scalar Implicatures, and begun a McGill post-doc with Thomas Shultz, of the McGill Department of Psychology. She will be part of the Center for Research on Language, Mind and Brain at McGill. Her project is on the acquisition of relevance implicatures.
