Current Fall Colloq Schedule
The current Fall 2006 GLSA colloquium schedule. All talks take place at 3:30 pm on Fridays, generally somewhere in Machmer.
There will in addition be some colloquia by UMass Amherst Linguistics faculty, as a way of highlighting the new research projects that are happening in the department right now.
[Thanks Keir and Ilaria!]
Monsters
The GLSA had its annual meeting last week. Many monsterships were reassigned, and some new ones were created. An asterisk marks a new position; an @ sign marks a new South College dweller. We linked to all the websites we could locate.

Undergrad Linguistics Club
The Undergrad Linguistics Club resumed its regular meetings yesterday (September 13, at 6:30 pm, in SC 301). David Fiske, Ryan O'Mara, and Lisa Shiozaki are heading it up. Their first order of business was deciding on a regular meeting time. We'll let you know what they decided next week.
The club is officially called the Undergraduate DARLings. They began meeting about one year ago, and they've been going steadily ever since, fueled mainly by presentations by undergraduate linguistics majors. All are welcome; the presentations do not presuppose expertise in any particular areas of linguistics.
[Thanks David!]
Evidentials Group and Acquisition Lab Meetings
The Evidentials Grant Group and the Acquisition Lab have joined forces. They will now have combined meetings on Tuesdays, 12:30 pm, in the Partee Room. This new combination is the result of the extensive interactions between the groups facilitated by the NSF Grant on Evidentials.
At the most recent meeting, Bart Hollebrandse and Helen Stickney each presented work.

[Thanks Youri!]
Semantics Reading Group
The SRG will continue to meet on Thursday evenings this semester, and Jan and Aynat have graciously agreed to continue hosting the event at their Northampton residence.* The group's first meeting will be on September 21, starting at 8:00 pm. It will likely be a planning meeting.
For those of you who are new to South College: the SRG is completely student run and consists mostly of student presentations and student-led discussions of articles and the like. It is a first-rate place for you to try out new ideas and to give practice talks for conferences. There are always nice things to drink and munch upon.
*Last year, it was Jan and AMT's residence, but AMT has gone north (way north). So: same place, new name. We're not sure whether continue hosting is felicitous in this sentence. There is enough here to fuel an entire SRG meeting (with martinis).
SNEWS
SNEWS is scheduled to take place on September 30, at Yale. From UMass Amherst, Amy Rose Deal and Shai Cohen will be presenting. Contact Chris about getting a ride (or providing one).
Peggy Speas Goes to Washington
Peggy Speas is attending an NSF Principal Investigators' meeting in Washington, DC, September 13-15. She is presenting a poster about the Evidentials project. Look for a copy of the poster in the department next week!
UMass Amherst Linguists at Sinn und Bedeutung 11
UMass Amherst Linguistics will be well represented at Sinn und Bedeutung 11, September 24-25, in the Departament de Traducció i Filologia, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona.
John McCarthy on FoxNews.com
John McCarthy is quoted in this article about the effects of the September 11 attacks on our language. Remarkably, John's comments were not warped into a statement of support for the current administration, a linguistically noteworthy event in itself.
