Domain restriction by demonstratives in Japanese (Misato Hiraga)

I will present my work in progress on demonstratives appearing in front of quantifier phrases that are composed of a so-called indeterminate phrase (IndetP) (Kuroda 1965, Shimoyama 1999) and a quantifier. The demonstratives in this structure seem to behave differently from when they appear before other kinds of quantifiers and numerals. I will show that the demonstrative in front of IndetP+Q restricts the domain of the Q, but not in the same way as the covert domain variable on the indeterminate pronoun does. I will present several possible structures that yield the correct meaning and discuss pros and cons of each structure.
