Semantics Reading Group
SRG meets today (October 18), 8:00 pm, at Jan and Aynat's place. The meeting will feature a presentation by Elizabeth Smith (Fall 2007 visitor from OSU). Elizabeth will talk about her recent work on the semantics of English comparative correlatives (title and abstract).
A New Semantics for English Comparative Correlatives

Comparative Correlatives (CCs) are sentences such as The faster we drive, the sooner we’ll get there. Their Reverse CC (RCC) counterparts are sentences like We’ll get there sooner, the faster we drive. Any analysis of the English (R)CC must account for the following:
- The role of each of the two or more CC clauses and their relation to one another
- How the (near-)monotonicity of the sentential meaning is derived from the meaning of the individual parts of the CC
- What role the comparative in each clause plays and whether this is the same as the role it plays in other comparative sentences
- The difference between CCs and RCCs
- The possibility of CCs with than clauses
- Limits on the felicity of some CC examples with than clauses
These are the questions/criteria that I hope to elucidate and (optimistically) answer/address in my presentation.
