GALA Workshop on Subordination in Language Acquisition

Subordination in language development

A workshop associated with GALA (Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition), September 6-8, 2007

Invited speaker: Josef Perner (Salzburg)

Call for papers deadline: March 15

Organized by Bart Hollebrandse and Uli Sauerland

Description

This workshop targets the syntax and semantics of clausal subordination in typically and atypically developing children. We understand clausal subordination broadly as referring to any propositional operator and consider the syntax and semantics of subordination. Several existing lines of research concern subordination in language development. On the one hand, linguists have found universal tendencies in the expression of such operators and postulated innate knowledge of the some parts of this system. On the other hand, cognitive scientists have investigated possible relationships between the development of a 'Theory of Mind' and the acquisition of embedded clauses, where, at the least, 'Theory of Mind' is a prerequisite for understanding the semantics of embedded clauses. We seek contributions that develop these lines of inquiry or seek to relate them to each other.
