Syntax Reading Group

Dalina Kallulli presents today (February 23) in the syntax reading group. The title of the talk is 'Resumption and concealed relatives'. All are welcome!

Abstract

Title: Resumption and Concealed Relatives

Dalina Kallulli

Starting from the well-known observation that, across languages, resumption and/or clitic doubling under wh-movement is restricted to D-linked wh-phrases, in this talk I put forward the claim that resumption (including clitic doubling) of seemingly D-linked wh-phrases is restricted to (sometimes concealed) relative clauses. While this point might seem relatively minor, it has important repercussions concerning the format and representation of relative clauses where resumption abounds. Resumption asymmetries obtaining in restrictive relative clauses are discussed and a proposal is presented to capture them, that crucially relies on the existence of a concealed relative and late merge of the seemingly doubled associate.
