Dholuo Language Page

This wiki contains information on the Dholuo language, a Nilo-Sarahan language of Kenya and Tanzania.

Much of the information here was collected by students in the Undergraduate Field Methods class taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the Spring of 2009 by Professor Seth Cable.

In addition to recordings and transcriptions of our class sessions, this wiki contains a searchable Dholuo dictionary compiled by the class, as well as the students' final projects on various aspects of Dholuo grammar.

There are five main sections to the wiki:

1.Basic Facts About Dholuo

Here you will find links to other resources on the Dholuo language. Some of these provide very basic background on the phonology and orthography, while others provide more advanced description of the syntax and morphology.

2.Recordings and Transcriptions of Class Sessions

This section contains links to recordings and transcriptions of the class interview sessions with Dholuo language consultant Martina Achieng.

3.Short Dholuo Text

This section contains a brief narrative text in Dholuo, transcribed by students in the class.

4.Searchable Dictionary

A Dholuo-English Dictionary compiled by students in the class (interface developed by Professors Chris Potts and Seth Cable).

5.Papers on Dholuo Grammar

This section contains students' final projects for the course, which cover various aspects of the grammar of Dholuo.
